Screening Asymptomatic High-Risk Adults for Lung Cancer May Reduce Deaths
A systematic review of the evidence suggests that screening asymptomatic high-risk adults at risk for lung cancer using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) may reduce mortality. Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and is the leading cause of cancer-related death for both men and women. Smoking is the most significant risk factor for lung cancer, accounting for approximately 85 percent of lung cancer cases. The risk continues even after smoking cessation, so current and former smokers are considered at risk. Being diagnosed at an early stage of disease is associated with lower lung cancer mortality. However, 75 percent of patients are diagnosed only after symptoms occur from later stage disease. Researchers for the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) reviewed 67 articles published since 2000 to assess the benefits and harms of screening asymptomatic high-risk adults for lung cancer using LDCT. This systematic evidence review was conducted to update to the Task Force's 2004 recommendation statement. Previously, the USPSTF found insufficient evidence to recommend for or against screening asymptomatic persons for lung cancer using chest x-ray or LDCT. This current review showed a benefit for LDCT screening at reducing lung cancer and all-cause mortality. There were some harms associated with LDCT screening, such as radiation exposure, over-diagnosis, and incidental findings, but the researchers concluded that the benefit of early detection outweigh the potential harms in certain high-risk populations. A draft recommendation will be posted for public comment to http://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org on July 29 at 5:00 p.m.

Twitter vs. Flying Cars
You've probably heard that line from Peter Thiel:
We wanted flying cars, instead we got 140 characters.
That line expressed his disappointment about how technology has turned out.
Now, when rich libertarian entrepreneurs, especially ones I admire as I do Thiel, talk, I listen. I also evaluate.
So does Joshua Gans.
On flying cars, Gans writes:
Let's start with flying cars. We should question the premise of whether we want flying cars. We would like quicker and less constrained options from getting from A to B but flying around in a car, while it may be a representation of the future with such freedom, when you think about it, cannot really deliver that value, at least in cities. Indeed, the fact that flying cars do not exist where they might be of value -- in less dense areas -- leads us to question whether people want them at all. This is at least enough to give us pause on the issue.
And Twitter? Gans writes:
Twitter is not just 140 characters. It is a new communications network. The best example of this is how you can communicate with customer support of companies. When you have a problem with, say, an airline, it is often easier to tweet about it and wait for the airline to respond than to contact the airline's support number. Now this is currently an advantage from congestion but, in reality, you can see how it may be superior overall. First, complaints are limited to 140 characters. That is a feature, not a bug. That means if a company is getting lots of complaints about something, it can see it really quickly. Second, it is easier to find a way of communicating with a company via Twitter than searching for support numbers. It is just straightforward. Twitter is an address book with easy search. My point here is that Twitter is a new communications protocol and more than just social media. That puts it on a path to something more than just the trivial.

Hudson wedding party boat crash: Driver had 'signs of intoxication' - sheriff
A boat carrying members of a wedding party struck a barge in the Hudson River Friday night. The boat's operator was charged with first-degree vehicular manslaughter Saturday. NBC's Lester Holt reports.
By Tracy Jarrett and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News
A second body has been found after two people, including a bride-to-be, went missing when a speedboat crashed into a barge on the Hudson River while carrying six members of a wedding party.
The second body was found on Sunday, about a mile downriver from where the first body was found a day earlier, Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco said on Sunday.
Neither body has been positively identified as belonging to the missing persons.
The pilot of the speedboat was charged on Saturday with vehicular manslaughter.
Jojo John, 35, was also charged with three counts of vehicular assault over Friday night?s crash, said Rockland County Sheriff William Barbera, according to Reuters.

"There were signs of intoxication," Barbera added, although lab test results were still pending.
John was in custody at Nyack Hospital Saturday night where his condition was ?critical,? according to hospital spokesperson Lauren Malone. He was arraigned at the hospital around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
After John is medically cleared, he will be sent to the Rockland County jail and held on $250,000 bail, Barbera confirmed to NBC News.
A female body was found discovered adrift and without a life jacket not far south of the Tappan Zee Bridge, Rockland County Undersheriff Robert Van Cura told NBCNewYork.com.
Four others remained in the hospital Saturday while investigators continued their search, the station reported.
The Coast Guard said six people were on a 21-foot Stingray near Piermont, N.Y., when it hit the barge at around 10:40 p.m. local time on Friday near the bridge.
The accident happened shortly after the boat left Piermont for a short trip across the river to Tarrytown, Rockland County Sheriff's Department Chief William Barbera said at a news conference on Saturday morning, according to the Associated Press.
"While the Rockland County Sheriff, N.Y. State Police and U.S. Coast Guard continue to investigate this tragic incident, the New York State Thruway Authority is conducting its own review of safety procedures on the Hudson River as part of the New NY Bridge Project,? said Brian Conybeare, special advisor to the governor, in a statement.
The bride-to-be, identified by family members as Lindsey Stewart, 30, was to get married on Aug. 10, relatives told NBC New York.
?Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time," Conybeare added.
Groom-to-be Brian Bond, 36, is among the four injured passengers, who were described as suffering severe injuries, including head trauma and broken bones. Bond is in ?fair? condition at Westchester Medical Center, according to spokesman David Billing.
Some of those injured are awake and providing information to investigators. Bond, however, is currently unable to speak due to his injuries, Walter Kosik, the bride?s stepfather told NBC New York.
Police said that while it would have been dark in the area at the time of the crash, the barge was lit up.
"At this point, Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC, has reported to the Thruway Authority that all Coast Guard lighting requirements were met and that the barges were properly lit Friday night. All lighting was checked Saturday morning and is fully operational at all barge locations associated with the project,? Conybeare said in the statement.
NBC News? Ali Fateh contributed to this report.

Will Apple's new budget iPhone be called the iPhone 5C?
Apple's forthcoming budget iPhone could be labelled the iPhone 5C, according to a piece of evidence that has recently come to light.
For months now we've been referring to Apple's forthcoming affordable smartphone as the 'budget iPhone,' but now we might have an idea of what its final name will be thanks to a photo posted on a WeiPhone forum.
As you can see, the above image appears to show a bunch of smartphone boxes. Each one contains the name iPhone 5C in a convincing Apple font.
With the next full price iPhone seemingly set to go by the name of the iPhone 5S, this name would certainly slot smoothly into Apple's naming scheme. But what could 'C' stand for?
The 'S' in the iPhone 4S stood for 'speed,' as it was a faster version of the iPhone 4. The iPhone 5S would be the same in relation to the iPhone 5. So how about that 'C'?
One possibility being bandied around is that the 'C' could stand for 'colour.' After all, numerous reports and leaks have suggested that the budget iPhone will come in a variety of colours beyond black and white, rather like Apple's iPod touch range.
Or could the 'C' relate to the phone's wallet-friendly credentials - so 'cost' or 'cheap.' Somehow, though, we doubt Apple would ever label any of its products cheap. It's more likely to be some vague expression such as 'cool,' or the aforementioned 'colour,' we reckon.
With the iPhone 5S rumoured for a September 6 launch date and an iPhone 5C surely set follow soon after - if not launch on the same day - we shouldn't have long to wait to see what that 'C' means, if it proves to be true.

Psychopathic Criminals Have "Empathy Switch"
I think this is mainly to do with tribalism, which is a very very ancient set of instincts (we share them to a large degree with the other apes, just look at how chimp tribes behave towards each other). People are built to fit themselves into kin groups, which works pretty well when you're talking about relative small societies of a hundred or a few thousand individuals. Essentially it is an "us vs. them", "friend vs. stranger" recognition system.
If someone is seen as a stranger, they are a potential threat, and actions can be taken against them that one would not take against a member of one's own kin group or society (this is why murder of a relative or close friend is still seen in most societies as a much higher crime than murder of a stranger or an acquaintance). Through the ages demagogues have been able to manipulate this basic tribal instinct to group people based upon relationship to further all sorts of atrocities. Whether it's persecution, exile, slavery or genocide, once you've convinced a populace that your desired target group is somehow alien, you can convince that populace to do almost anything.
It's as the old story goes (and time for the Godwin); Hitler convinced an entire nation made of up people who adhered to a religion whose basic tenet was "love thy brother" that persecution and ultimately murder of millions of members of ethnic groups (Jews and Roma in particular) was perfectly fine, and yet even Hitler was a vegetarian who loved his dogs.
Whether this "empathy switch" in psychopaths is related to that I don't know. Obviously even in normal people there is a way to trigger the dehumanizing of groups if they can be convinced that they are alien threats. Mind you even look like genocides like the Jewish Holocaust or the Rwandan genocide, there was long standing prejudice and mistrust against the targeted group, so it's not as if appeared out of nowhere.

Giant Mirror Lakes Invade Beijing To Reflect China's Water Crisis
At first glance, it looks like Beijing is being swallowed up by rising tides. But these aren't giant bottomless puddles?they're mirrors, installed throughout Beijing by the Chinese wing of advertising agency Grey Group. The point? To draw attention to the country's rapidly-disappearing lakes.

Acer Aspire S7-392 Ultrabook arrives in the US, starts at $1,450
We first met Acer's Aspire S7 at Computex in 2012, and since then it's gone through a major overhaul to become the Aspire S7-392 -- a Haswell-equipped Ultrabook that's now available in the US. You can choose between two models up for sale at retail outlets and on Acer's online store, with the cheaper $1,450 package toting a 1.6GHz Core i5 processor and a 128GB SSD. The $1,700 variant comes with a more powerful 1.8GHz Core i7 processor and double the storage space, but their other specs are identical. Both Windows 8 Ultrabooks boast a 13.3-inch 1,920 x 1,080 touchscreen display, an HD webcam, an 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and a bigger battery that promises up to 7 hours of power. It's too bad the European version's 2,560 x 1,440 screen didn't make it stateside, but at least the US incarnations are a bit easier on the wallet.
Update: We've revised the post to reflect that the higher-end model comes with a Core i7 processor, and not a Core i5.

Antelope Valley coach Mark Covert to stop daily running after 16,437 days
Photo gallery: Mark Covert ends 16,437-day running streak
Jon Sutherland always envisioned Mark Covert would run forever.
Or at least that's what the Notre Dame cross country coach wished would be the legacy for his friend and former Valley College teammate.
Sutherland, 62, boasts the second-longest streak in U.S. history of running at least one mile each day, a span of more than 44 years.
After Tuesday, it will become the longest active stretch in the country when Covert, 62, ends his streak after 16,437 days, on the 45th anniversary of when it started.
"Nobody thinks they're going to run a year (consecutively), let alone 40 or 45," Covert said. "I never thought anything like this was going to happen, but I'm so thankful for all the support I've received. I never realized what an important thing this has been to so many people and what the streak has meant to them."
Covert, who has coached cross country and track and field at Antelope Valley College since 1990, will begin his daily workout at 7 a.m. on Tuesday running around Marauders stadium and plans to cover a little more than a mile to conclude the streak.
Then he will take a day off from running Wednesday for the first time since 1968.
"I have mixed
emotions about it. We've been close friends for a long time. It's bittersweet for me," said Sutherland, whose streak trails Covert's record by 307 days."I'm happy for him that he can make this decision and be at peace with it. He seems really relaxed about it."
Covert's streak, which began with a 15-mile run the day after returning from a family vacation following his graduation from Burbank High in 1968, has survived several injuries and ailments, most notably enduring the required one mile in the days immediately after meniscus surgery a decade ago.
A mid-foot collapse ultimately forced Covert to reach the decision to conclude the streak on Tuesday, since his right foot doesn't allow him to run at his desired pace, instead hobbling through the miles most days during the past year.
"There's no rhythm to my running," Covert said in a recent interview with Competitor Magazine's Brian Metzler.
"What I do now is hobble around. I suppose I could continue doing this until I can't walk, but I don't see any point in doing that."
Covert is expected to have surgery later this year to repair the foot, but will continue to get his desired daily exercise by riding a bicycle.
Great Britain's Ron Hill is credited with the world's longest streak of running at least one mile each day, having done so since December 20, 1964, although he, like Covert, has endured his share of obstacles by completing a mile on crutches wearing a plaster cast and a specially adapted shoe the day after bunion surgery, in addition to overcoming a broken sternum the day after a car accident.
Sutherland's streak has also survived a few close calls, including running for nearly nine months while rehabilitating a broken hip.
Sutherland credits Covert's toughness and resolve for helping him persevere to remain among the active list of eight Americans who have run at
Mark Covert runs at Antelope Valley College, Monday, July 22, 2013. Covert is the U.S. record holder and No. 2 in the world for the longest streak of consecutive days having run at least 1 mile. Covert will end the streak Tuesday, July 23, at Antelope Valley College on the 45th anniversary of when it started. (Michael Owen Baker/L.A. Daily News) (null)
least one mile each day for more than 40 years."Mark was always a leader. He was a visionary, a pioneer. He wasn't the rah-rah guy, he just led by example," Sutherland said. "When he says something, people listen. I can't think of another person in my life that I like as much and respect as much as Mark."
Even in the days before the streak concluded, Covert took time in his daily video diaries at markcovertnevermiss.com to thank Burbank High coach Frank Kallem and Valley College coach Laszlo Tabori for inspiring him to become such a determined runner and competitor and develop into a state and national champion who earned All-America honors seven times at the NCAA Division I and II levels.
"They taught me the value of discipline and sticking with things, and I've tried to pass that along to my runners," said Covert, who has also coached at Glendale, L.A. Trade Tech and Valley colleges before arriving at AVC.
"I have to stress to my runners, this isn't something you're doing, this is a lifestyle. They have to commit to it. This is something I want to do, not that I have to do. You have to make it important to yourself."
Chris Covert, formerly the women's cross country and track and field coach at Southern Connecticut State University, calls his father "the toughest man alive."
Debi Covert, Mark's wife whom he first met while teaching a running class, has been instrumental in preserving the streak on several occasions, even completing simple acts like helping her husband put on his shoes when a nagging back injury prevented him from doing so.
"There is a saying in the running world that there's tough and then there's 'Covert tough,'" Debi Covert said. "A lot of people around this country go by 'Covert tough.'"
The same toughness is alive today in Covert that was present in 1968, when he accomplished the longest run during the streak by covering 52 miles in 7 hours, 35 minutes with a group of friends.
He has carried that determination with him as an athlete at Cal State Fullerton, as well as during the 1972 Olympic Trials, when he became the first athlete to cross the finish line in a pair of Nike waffle-soled shoes by placing seventh in the marathon.
"Nobody in the Valley had ever done what he did," Sutherland said. "He was our version of (Steve) Prefontaine and (David) Bedford, just without the flashy personality. He would throw those crazy times out there and everybody had to try to chase them."
And Sutherland, along with every other American, will continue to chase Covert's remarkable standard of longevity by running a mile each day.
Covert said he will still run, just not with the frequency he once did. But he hasn't lost his passion for a challenging workout, even if it will be with more regularity on his bicycle than on the AVC track.
"At five years it was a monster. I don't know what you'd call it now, but it's fun to sit back and think about all the different guys and different personalities who have passed through (during the streak)," Covert said. "I just wanted to put my shoes on every morning and go out and run. It's something I've always looked forward to. Getting to 45 years was significant to me, so that's why I'm carrying on to this point. But I'm not retiring, I'm not dying. Now I'm just going to get on my bike and ride every day."
