VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A Virginia Beach family is picking up the pieces after a fire damaged their home. According to Jack Crandell with the Virginia Beach Fire Department, the flames sparked around 5 p.m. at a house in the 100 block of Waverly Drive, which is in the Princess Anne Plaza section of the city.
Firefighters were able to get the flames under control in about ten minutes. Crandell said the fire was located in a bedroom, and extended to the attic. He said there is smoke and fire damage to the bedroom, and smoke damage to the rest of the home.
No one was hurt.
Family members told WAVY.com they had just finished packing for a trip to Disney World when they noticed the fire. The woman who owns the home lost her husband two years ago, and a daughter last year.
"It's nothing but black. It's all black and burned. Things are melted," the homeowner's daughter Robin Wiggins said. "There is water on the floor everywhere. I feels like a death, like another death to me you know."
Investigators believe an electrical short on a ceiling fan in the attic started the flames. ?
As Nelson Mandela slowly fades into history, yet another remarkable moment is helping to seal his legacy: Millions of people around the world are preparing for this beloved man to die.

In their zeal to defend the name Redskins against disorganized and scattered opposition that gradually is becoming more organized and less scattered, the NFL team bearing that name has had a tendency to seize in knee-jerk fashion upon anything that supports the position that the name isn?t offensive.
The two primary tactics having entailed citing the various high schools that still use the name (there are fewer all the time) and trumpeting the opinions of Native Americans who have no problem with the name, and who ostensibly would regard as a compliment the greeting, ?What?s up, redskin??
As explained by Dave McKenna in an item published earlier today by Deadspin (yeah, I know that one of the morons who works there recently called me a moron . . . again), a supposed Native American Chief whom the Redskins recently trotted out in support of the name isn?t a Chief, and may not even be a Native American.? But the Redskins, who apparently have chosen to dispense with steps like vetting a guest, put the guy on their in-house web show, described him as a Chief, and had him explain why he supports the name.
And, yes, the guy actually said that Native Americans on the ?reservation? actually great each other with, ?Hey, what?s up, redskin??
Complicating matters for the league is that Commissioner Roger Goodell recently pointed to the same non-Chief-possibly-non-Native-American in a letter to member of Congress defending the ongoing use of the name Redskins.
The full item is worth a read, even though it?s a little lengthy.? Also, it probably should include a disclaimer that the author once triggered a defamation lawsuit from owner Daniel Snyder, which gives McKenna a natural bias.
But the point has been made.? Yet again, the Redskins end up looking bad while trying to make their name look good.
If nothing else, we now know why they?ve hired Frank Luntz.? Then again, maybe they think he?s a Chief, too.
According to a document obtained by the Wall Street Journal, Apple will pay 0.13 cents and 15 percent of advertising revenue to major labels for every song played on iTunes Radio in its first year, climbing to .14 cents and 19 percent in year two. In comparison, Pandora currently pays 0.12 cents per song, and WSJ added that Apple is offering publishers more than double Pandora's rate for royalties. There are some exclusions to Apple's offering, however: it won't need to pay for songs streamed for 20 seconds or less, those that are already in your iTunes library or certain promoted tracks. For its part, Pandora said that comparing the two is unfair, since varying features between the services could trigger royalty payments differently. It also addressed recent controversy about those royalties in a detailed blog post (see the More Coverage link after the break). In addition, insiders say that Apple's primary aim is to encourage listeners to buy more tracks on iTunes, in turn boosting hardware sales. Still, the new service will no doubt reap the benefits of Apples new iAd mobile advertising platform, so it's likely that Cupertino will have its cake and eat it, too.
