Prasanna Jayawardene suffers hairline fracture to thumb ? Cricket News Update

Having experienced some bruising after he was struck on the top of his right thumb by a Mitchell Johnson delivery, Sri Lankan wicketkeeper batsman Prasanna Jayawardene was revealed to have suffered a hairline fracture, after he was dismissed during the first innings of Sri Lanka?s ongoing second Test against Australia, today on December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

?There was some bruising on his thumb after his innings, so we thought we'd better check,? team manager Charith Senanayake has stated shortly after Jayawardene suffered the injury.

?It's a bit too early to tell and I'm still getting the information from the physio, [Prasanna] has had a nasty knock on the thumb and its? pretty tender and sore at the moment, but we'll get more information on that during the night,? Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford said.

Later in the day, X-rays revealed that the 33-year-old had, in fact, sustained a hairline fracture. The injury occurred after the right-hander was hit on the thumb by a bouncer from Johnson, after which the ball went on to bounce off the shoulder of his bat, right to a waiting Phillip Hughes in the slip cordon. Jayawardene made his exit in the 39th over, having contributed 24 runs to Sri Lanka?s paltry first innings total of 156.

With the wicketkeeper having been forced to pull out of the remainder of day one, Kumar Sangakkara donned the gloves in his stead. Whether Jayawardene will be keeping the wickets on the second day of play is yet to be determined by team management.

In addition to the unfortunate accident, Johnson caused plenty of damage to the rest of the Sri Lankan batting order on the first day of their second Test at Melbourne. Veteran batsman Kumar Sangakkara (58) remained the only batsman who managed to put up a fight, while the rest gave their wickets away cheaply. Johnson (14-2-63-4) spearheaded Australia?s attack, and supported by the efforts of Peter Siddle (8-1-30-2), debutant Jackson Bird (13-5-32-2), and off-spinner Nathan Lyon (5.4-0-23-2), succeeded in bowling the visiting Sri Lankan side out for a first innings total of 156.
