67 Percent of Texas Republicans Want Obama Impeached

If Democrats are serious about trying to turn Texas blue, they should get a gander at a just-released poll of Lone Star State voters that found 67 percent of Republican respondents support the impeachment of President Obama. Of greater concern for liberals: the poll was conducted by the?-

FCC filing reveals Apple TV model A1469 with slightly smaller dimensions (update: new antenna, CPU too?)

Apple TV clears the FCC,

We don't generally find surprises from Apple in the daily stream of FCC documents and test reports, but a new filing published today seems to suggest that a new Apple TV model of some sort could be on the way. While the diagram pictured above doesn't suggest any major changes to the device's appearance, it does list some slightly smaller measurements: 93.78mm square compared to the 98mm of the current model. That's certainly not the biggest of differences, but the measurements in previous Apple FCC filings have been spot on. The model number, A1469, is also one that we haven't seen before, but the documents unfortunately don't offer much else in the way of details (only confirmation of the same WiFi capabilities as the current-gen Apple TV).

As MacRumors noted yesterday, a look at the download options for the latest Apple TV software update also revealed a new "AppleTV3,2" model, which it speculated could be an international version of the device -- although it of course remains to be seen if it and this model are one and the same. For now, you can get a closer look at the filing yourself at the source link.

Update: Anandtech has peeked through the filings and the source code, finding a new single antenna setup that follows the design of other iDevices, and reference to an updated A5X SoC at its heart.

'Arrow' star teases China White's return

Jack Rowand / The CW

Kelly Hu as China White on "Arrow."

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

Watch your back, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell): Triad assassin China White (Kelly Hu) is returning to Starling City.

"I just did the reading for the next episode," Hu told The Clicker from Vancouver, where the CW's hit comic-book adaptation is filmed. "There's so many twists and turns!"

"There are so many surprises that I was sitting at the reading -- it was the first time I'd heard it -- ?gasping at people appearing and people who are going to be in danger," she said.

Without revealing specific details about the reunion between the villainess and the vigilante, Hu warned, "Just when you think you know what's going on, you don't."

One thing we can always count on are Amell's legendary abs -- with which Hu has had firsthand experience. "He was completely clothed," Hu shared about seeing the actor again at the latest reading. "The first thing I did was rub my hand on his stomach."

"It was like real washboard!" she marveled. "He wasn't even expecting me to touch him so he wasn't flexing and it was like a washboard. I couldn't help myself," she said, laughing. "I could not possibly be the only person to do that."

Catch "Arrow" -- and Stephen Amell's amazing abs -- Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on the CW.

What new surprises are in store for Oliver Queen & Co.? Share your predictions on our Facebook page!

Fossilized conduits suggest water flowed beneath Martian surface

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Ridges in impact craters on Mars appear to be fossils of cracks in the Martian surface, formed by minerals deposited by flowing water. Water flowing beneath the surface suggests life may once have been possible on Mars.

Networks of narrow ridges found in impact craters on Mars appear to be the fossilized remnants of underground cracks through which water once flowed, according to a new analysis by researchers from Brown University.

The study, in press in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, bolsters the idea that the subsurface environment on Mars once had an active hydrology and could be a good place to search for evidence of past life. The research was conducted by Lee Saper, a recent Brown graduate, with Jack Mustard, professor of geological sciences.

The ridges, many of them hundreds of meters in length and a few meters wide, had been noted in previous research, but how they had formed was not known. Saper and Mustard thought they might once have been faults and fractures that formed underground when impact events rattled the planet's crust. Water, if present in the subsurface, would have circulated through the cracks, slowly filling them in with mineral deposits, which would have been harder than the surrounding rocks. As those surrounding rocks eroded away over millions of years, the seams of mineral-hardened material would remain in place, forming the ridges seen today.

To test their hypothesis, Saper and Mustard mapped over 4,000 ridges in two crater-pocked regions on Mars, Nili Fossae and Nilosyrtis. Using high-resolution images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the researchers noted the orientations of the ridges and composition of the surrounding rocks.

The orientation data is consistent with the idea that the ridges started out as fractures formed by impact events. A competing hypothesis suggests that these structures may have been sheets of volcanic magma intruding into the surrounding rock, but that doesn't appear to be the case. At Nili Fossae, the orientations are similar to the alignments of large faults related to a mega-scale impact. At Nilosyrtis, where the impact events were smaller in scale, the ridge orientations are associated with each of the small craters in which they were found. "This suggests that fracture formation resulted from the energy of localized impact events and are not associated with regional-scale volcanism," Saper said.

Importantly, Saper and Mustard also found that the ridges exist exclusively in areas where the surrounding rock is rich in iron-magnesium clay, a mineral considered to be a telltale sign that water had once been present in the rocks.

"The association with these hydrated materials suggests there was a water source available," Saper said. "That water would have flowed along the path of least resistance, which in this case would have been these fracture conduits."

As that water flowed, dissolved minerals would have been slowly deposited in the conduits, in much the same way mineral deposits can build up and eventually clog drain pipes. That mineralized material would have been more resistant to erosion than the surrounding rock. And indeed, Saper and Mustard found that these ridges were only found in areas that were heavily eroded, consistent with the notion that these are ancient structures revealed as the weaker surrounding rocks were slowly peeled away by wind.

Taken together, the results suggest the ancient Martian subsurface had flowing water and may have been a habitable environment.

"This gives us a point of observation to say there was enough fracturing and fluid flow in the crust to sustain at least a regionally viable subsurface hydrology," Saper said. "The overarching theme of NASA's planetary exploration has been to follow the water. So if in fact these fractures that turned into these ridges were flowing with hydrothermal fluid, they could have been a viable biosphere."

Saper hopes that the Curiosity rover, currently making its way across its Gale Crater landing site, might be able to shed more light on these types of structures.

"In the site at Gale Crater, there are thought to be mineralized fractures that the rover will go up and touch," Saper said. "These are very small and may not be exactly the same kind of feature we studied, but we'll have the opportunity to crush them up and do chemical analysis on them. That could either bolster our hypothesis or tell us we need to explore other possibilities."

The research was supported by a grant from NASA's Rhode Island Space Grant Consortium and through a NASA subcontract with the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins University.

Obama to send more aid to Syria

Under fire for not doing more to help Syria?s rebels, President Barack Obama announced on Tuesday that he's sending opponents of strongman Bashar al-Assad another $155 million in humanitarian aid and defended his handling of the bloody conflict. Obama said the aid sends a message to the world.

?The relief we send doesn?t say ?Made in America,? but make no mistake?our aid reflects the commitment of the American people,? he said in a video posted on the White House website. The message includes Arabic subtitles.

Obama, who faces chiefly Republican criticism for not offering the rebels American weapons or taking other steps to beat back Assad?s armed forces, said the money would help Syrians under fire and those who have fled to neighboring countries.

?I want to speak directly to the people of Syria,? he said in the video. ?This new aid will mean more warm clothing for children and medicine for the elderly; flour and wheat for your families and blankets, boots and stoves for those huddled in damaged buildings.

?It will mean health care for victims of sexual violence and field hospitals for the wounded,? he continued. ?Even as we work to end the violence against you, this aid will help address some of the immediate needs you face each day."

The new aid will bring total U.S. assistance to Syrian rebels to $365 million.

?We?re under no illusions. The days ahead will continue to be very difficult. But what?s clear is that the regime continues to weaken and lose control of territory,? Obama said.

?The opposition continues to grow stronger," he added. "More Syrians are standing up for their dignity. The Assad regime will come to an end. The Syrian people will have their chance to forge their own future. And they will continue to find a partner in the United States of America.?

While senior Obama aides say Washington has not been arming the rebels, there have been media reports that the CIA and other agencies have been steering arms from third parties to certain opposition forces and working to exclude Islamist extremists?like al-Qaida?from assistance.

No criticism at Davos Japan policy aimed to guide yen: Japan economics minister

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Economics Minister Akira Amari said on Monday that there was no criticism at the World Economic Forum in Davos over the weekend that Japan's fiscal and monetary policy was aimed at guiding the yen's level.

Japan gained support for its strategy from figures including International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde and Canada's central bank governor, Amari told a news conference after a cabinet meeting.

Amari said in Davos that it was up to the market to determine the currency rates, and that the Bank of Japan had independently opted to sign a joint statement with the government on actions to fight deflation and revive economic growth.

Writing to be understood ? Butterflies and Wheels

Greta did a post the other day about someone who rethought something she wrote and then took it back. I hadn?t seen it until this morning.

This is how it?s done, people. She didn?t double down. She didn?t insist that she hadn?t done anything wrong; she didn?t equate ?lots of people disagreeing with you? with tribalism, bullying, McCarthyism, or witch hunts. She kept it short and sweet, without a ?making it worse? morass of defensive rationalizations/ making it all about her hurt feelings about people being mean to her. She heard the criticism, accepted that she screwed up, and apologized. This is how it?s done.

([cough] Michael Shermer [cough])

The result of course was that ? starting in comment 2, already ? some anonymous detective insisted for comment after comment that I misrepresented Shermer. No I didn?t. AD also insisted my article (which AD thought was a blog post) was about Shermer and that I had said Shermer is a sexist. No, and no.

A guy called Michael Heath has been insisting even more insistently on a couple of posts of Ed Brayton?s ? Shermer and the Myth of Feminst Persecution and a later post that had nothing to do with me or Shermer?- that I lied about Shermer, that I am a liar, that I defamed Shermer, that my article is demagoguery. That?s all false.

Greta addressed the detective ? one ?coelsblog? ? in a long comment, which sums up a lot of things with beautiful clarity.

coelsblog: I?m going to say this once.

For the sake of argument, let?s concede all your major points. Let?s say that while Shermer?s statements were sexist, he didn?t intend any of the sexist intent that came across. And let?s say that Benson?s interpretation uncharitably took them out of context: what he said was sexist, but it wasn?t as sexist as she made it out to be. I don?t agree with this assessment: but for the sake of argument, let?s say that it?s true.

So what?

Does that in any way, shape or form justify Shermer?s reaction? Does it justify him calling criticism of him a McCarthy-like witch hunt, a purging, an inquisition, comparing it to the Nazi party? Does it make Benson responsible for what Shermer said? And does it make Benson?s actions more problematic than Shermer?s, and more worthy of extensive critique?

If you think Shermer?s ranting response was justified, or that Benson was somehow responsible for it ? then I have nothing more to say to you. That is an indefensible position. And if you don?t? then why are you so fixated on Benson? Why are you micro-analyzing her comments in comment after comment after comment? Why do you think that her misinterpretation (in your eyes) is more worthy of more criticism than Shermer?s off-the-rails hissy-fit?

When you say something sexist, racist, homophobic, whatever, and someone calls you out on it? you apologize. Full stop. Even if the person calling you out got something slightly wrong? you let that pass. You say, ?I?m so sorry. I did not intend to say anything sexist/ racist/ homophobic/ etc., but I can see why people are angry, and I can see why they saw it the way they did. I?ll speak more carefully in the future.?? You don?t make it all about you and how everyone?s being mean to you; you don?t make your hurt feelings over being misunderstood more important than sexism/ racism/ homophobia/ etc. Do you think that every atheist who called out Charlie Jane Anders got absolutely everything right, and said everything in the best way possible? I doubt it highly. She didn?t focus on that. She focused on the injury she had done, and the apology for it. That?s what makes her a class act.

And when you ? speaking to you now, coelsblog, not to the generic ?you? ? acknowledge in passing that Shermer?s sexist remarks were not okay, and then spend comment after comment after comment micro-analyzing Benson?s criticism of it, and blaming her for his off-the-rails reaction? it?s a classic ?yes, but? response to sexism. In fact, ?Yes, but? the person writing about this incident didn?t behave absolutely perfectly in all respects. Why aren?t we talking about that?? is one of the ?Yes, but?? examples listed in that piece. The expectation that critics of sexist behavior always get everything absolutely right ? and if they don?t, they should expect the targets of their criticism to react horribly ? is, itself, unbelievably sexist. Stop it. Right now. Just stop it.

The imperfection in what I wrote in the article was saying of the overall stereotype, ?Don?t laugh: Michael Shermer said exactly that?? when I would have closed that loophole by instead saying ?Michael Shermer invoked exactly that stereotype??

But that is really not a very big imperfection. Since I immediately go on to report exactly what Shermer really did say, it?s an absurd bit of pettifogging to pretend that I meant the ?said exactly that? literally or that I intended it to mislead. For fuck?s sake, if I intended it to mislead why would I immediately quote exactly what he really did say? What I said is just a normal bit of commentary. People who know how to read know that. It?s obvious on the page which bit is in fact exactly what he said. Aesthetically, ?invoked exactly that stereotype? is somewhat inferior to ?said exactly that.? It?s a bit cluttered. In academic writing, of course, precision trumps aesthetics every time, but guess what, I?m not an academic and Free Inquiry is not an academic journal. There?s always a tension in this kind of writing, between pedantry and style. You make choices all the time. There are tradeoffs. You make them, generally, based on the background assumption that the reader is not an idiot. I never for one second thought that any reader would be idiot enough to read ?said exactly that? and then ignore the next part where I spelled out what?Shermer actually did say. Nor did I think any reader would be idiot enough to read ?it?s a guy thing? in the following paragraph and think?Shermer had?said that, either, since I had just spelled out what he did say ? ?it?s more of a guy thing.?

You have to assume the reader is not an idiot, because if you don?t, you get horrible over-literal baby-step writing with no color or energy or wit. Lunatics are insisting that I wrote those four paragraphs (that address Shermer) the way I did as a dastardly attempt to frame him. The hell I did. I wrote it that way because writing that assumes the reader can?t read is terrible writing, and I refuse to do set out to do terrible writing. (Terrible writing I do by accident is another story.)

Caterpillar 4Q earnings fall by half

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Caterpillar's fourth-quarter net income fell by half after it took a big charge for a deal in China that went bad, and because of slower growth in China and economic uncertainty in the U.S. and Europe.

Still, its adjusted profit and revenue were better than analysts expected. And while cautious about the global economic outlook, Caterpillar does expect conditions to pick up later in the year, outside of Europe. Shares rose 2.4 percent in premarket trading.

Caterpillar Inc. makes construction and mining equipment as well as power generators, so its growth rises and falls with the world's economy.

For the fourth quarter, Caterpillar earned $697 million, or $1.04 per share. That was down from a profit of $1.55 billion, or $2.32 per share a year earlier.

Revenue fell 7 percent to $16.08 billion as dealers reduced inventory.

The most recent quarter included a non-cash charge of 87 cents per share to write down the purchase of Zhengzhou Siwei. Not counting that, analysts surveyed by FactSet had been expecting a profit of $1.70 per share.

Caterpillar's purchase of Siwei last year gave it a new business ? roofing supports for mines ? in a country where mining is growing quickly. But on Jan. 18, Caterpillar said it had found "deliberate, multi-year, coordinated accounting misconduct" in the accounting at Siwei, and said it will write down its investment in the company by $580 million. It also said it dismissed several senior managers at the company.

For this year, Caterpillar expects revenue of $60 billion to $68 billion, with a profit of $7 to $9 per share.

Analysts had been expecting a profit of $8.54 per share on revenue of $64.58 billion.

Caterpillar said there's a wide range in its outlook because of the high level of uncertainty in the world. It expects relatively weak growth in the U.S. economy. Growth in China will improve, but not back to the levels seen in 2010 or 2011, Caterpillar said.

For all of 2012, the company's profits rose 15 percent to $5.68 billion, or $8.48 per share, up from $4.93 billion, or $7.40 per share, in 2011. Revenue rose 10 percent to $65.88 billion, from $60.14 billion.

Shares of the Peoria, Ill.-based company rose $2.32 to $97.90 in premarket trading.

Thomas: No sympathy for steroids-tainted stars

CHICAGO (AP) ? Retired Chicago White Sox slugger Frank Thomas feels even better about his career after watching steroids-tainted stars Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Roger Clemens fail to gain entry to the Hall of Fame.

"I think I've done enough to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer," he said Saturday at the team's fan convention.

"Watching all the nonsense unfold and not really knowing what was going on, it makes me much more proud of my career," he said. "I competed in that era. I played at a high level in that era. There are a lot of great players, but as it unfolds, a lot of it was not the real deal. I know 100 percent I was the real deal."

Bonds, Sosa and Clemens were denied in their first year of eligibility amid suspicions by some voters that their accomplishments were boosted by performance-enhancing drugs. Mark McGwire, 10th on the career home run list, received 16.9 percent of the vote on his seventh try, far short of the 75 percent needed for election.

"I wouldn't say I feel bad for them," Thomas said. "I respected them on the field, but they chose this. They made their own decisions off the field and they've got to live with it."

He said their numbers were "incredible" but "fake."

"Any time you look at the PED situation, you look at the Lance Armstrong situation ? you look at stuff like that, it's serious out there," Thomas said. "Thank God I'm blessed I did it the right way. I had a good family base that made me outwork everybody else because that's the only way I made it to the big leagues."

A two-time American League MVP with a .301 average and 521 homers, will join Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine as first-time eligible on the ballot sent to voters this autumn.

Thomas was surprised Craig Biggio did not gain election despite having 3,060 hits. Biggio appeared on 68.2 percent of the 569 ballots and fell 39 votes shy.

Thomas thinks baseball's drug-testing is on the right path. Players will be tested for human growth hormone throughout the regular season following blood testing during spring training last year. Those are in addition to urine tests.

"There won't be any more scandals. Baseball is going to be 100 percent clean," Thomas said. "They're going to have to be."

Leading Democrat: Gun control faces uphill climb

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. speaks during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, to introduce legislation on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition feeding devices. Congressional Democrats are reintroducing legislation to ban assault weapons but the measure faces long odds even after last month's mass school shooting in Newtown, Conn. (AP) ? Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who's leading the push to restore an assault weapon ban, acknowledged on Sunday that the effort faces tough odds to pass Congress and she blamed the nation's largest gun-rights group.

Feinstein, D-Calif., on Thursday introduced a bill that would prohibit 157 specific weapons and ammunition magazines that have more than 10 rounds. The White House and fellow Democrats are skeptical the measure is going anywhere, given lawmakers who are looking toward re-election might fear pro-gun voters and the National Rifle Association.

"This has always been an uphill fight. This has never been easy. This is the hardest of the hard," Feinstein said.

"I think I can get it passed because the American people are very much for it," Feinstein said of the measure that follows a similar measure she championed into law 1994 but expired a decade later.

She acknowledged, however, the NRA's political clout.

"They come after you. They put together large amounts of money to defeat you," Feinstein said.

She also said the group was a pawn of those who make weapons.

"The NRA is venal. ... The NRA has become an institution of gun manufacturers," she said.

The NRA disputed her characterization.

"The NRA is a grass-roots organization. We have more than 4 million dues-paying members and tens of millions of supporters all across this country. Our political power comes from them. Decent and logical people would understand that," spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said.

The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to take up the proposal on Wednesday and hear from the NRA's CEO and senior vice president, Wayne LaPierre. Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Ariz., who was shot in an assassination attempt, also plans to testify.

Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the GOP vice presidential nominee in 2012, said Congress should focus on the causes of violence and not the weapons alone.

"We need to look beyond just recycling failed policies of the past. ... Let's go beyond just this debate and make sure we get deeper. What's our policy on mental illness? What's going on in our culture that produces this kind of thing? You know, we need to have that kind of a discussion and debate," Ryan said.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., also urged lawmakers to consider mental health issues.

"When I hear some of this conversation, I think that we're looking at symptoms, we're not looking at the root causes," she said. "And I understand the senator's passion for this, but I got to tell you, an assault ban is not the answer to helping keep people safe."

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who favors the assault weapons ban, expressed skepticism that it would be returned to law.

"It's probably a heavy lift in Congress," he said.

In the wake of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn. In December, President Barack Obama has pushed to expanded background checks, restoring the assault weapons ban and banning high-capacity ammunition magazines. But members of his own party may thwart his hopes.

Feinstein appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation" and CNN's "State of the Union." Ryan was on NBC's "Meet the Press." Blackburn and Kelly were on CBS.

Texting while walking bad idea, soggy newscaster learns

YouTube

Laura Safe, texting her boyfriend, just before she made her big splash.

Generally speaking, those who report the news try to avoid being ... well, the news. But sometimes accidents happen?? like in the case of?a radio newscaster who walked directly into a canal while texting her boyfriend.

"Oh dear. I should really be called Laura UNsafe after the day I've had!" tweeted Laura Safe, a newscaster for UK-based music radio station Capital FM, about a week ago.?It didn't take long for the world to discover why Safe was feeling dangerous, because her colleagues were more than happy to make the details of her morning part of a segment.

"Poor Laura Safe. All she wants to do is read the news. And this morning, all we wanted to do is take the mickey," a note on the Capital FM website explained on the day of the incident. "The canal was icy, she was texting ... it was the weather's fault really."

Holding nothing back, whoever wrote that note even finished it with a flourish: "Ahahahahahahahahahaha!"

"I thought there was pavement ahead of me, I could see it out of the corner of my eye," Safe said during a segment on Capital FM's Capital Breakfast show. After viewing?CCTV footage acquired by the Telegraph, we find this to be an almost reasonable explanation. The canal running through?the Mailbox ??the Birmingham shopping center in which Safe had her stumble?? is at the bottom of a set of stairs, with no guardrail of any sort preventing someone, such as a distracted newscaster, from walking directly into it. We wouldn't be surprised if it did indeed look as if it was merely a walking area, if it happened to be frozen over and one wasn't really looking ahead.

Excuses and theories aside, Safe was quite lucky.?Neil Edginton ??managing director at property development group EDG Property, who coincidentally?was part of the team?behind the creation of the Mailbox and its odd layout?? happened to witness her accident.

"Slightly wet, as just had to pull someone out of canal! Walking towards me on their phone, straight into the water! #splash," Edginton tweeted shortly after pulling Safe out of the water. He'd tried to warn her right as she was taking the final step into icy doom: He shouted "Nooooooooooooo!"

As much fun as Safe's colleagues and other reporters appear to be having while covering her accident, distracted walking isn't really a joking matter. In 2008, the American College of Emergency Physicians warned of rising reports involving oblivious texters, with injuries involving text-messaging pedestrians, bicyclists, and even horseback riders.?

More recently, we've seen plenty of individuals endanger themselves by using their cellphones while walking. In January 2011?a woman fell into a water fountain while walking through a mall and text messaging. Video footage of the accident?was posted to YouTube and quickly made its rounds on the Internet.?In April 2012, a Califonia-based man nearly walked directly into a bear because he was distracted by his cellphone.?In August 2012, footage of an earlier incident in which a man stumbled right off a plain platform while focused on his phone circulated on the Internet.

In April 2012, October 2012, and January 2013, this reporter managed to bruise her knee on a desk corner because of a distracting text message. She is considering changing desks.

Benedict XVI's message for World Communications Day

YoutubeJanuary 24, 2013. (Romereports.com) Benedict XVI published on Thursday his message for the World Communications Day. Under the title ?Social Networks: portals of truth and faith; new spaces for evangelization,? the Pope reflected on the importance of being inclusive and truthful within social networks. ?At times the gentle voice of reason can be overwhelmed by the din of excessive information,? he said. ?And it fails to attract attention which is given instead to those who express themselves in a more persuasive manner.??

FULL TEXT:?

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As the 2013 World Communications Day draws near, I would like to offer you some reflections on an increasingly important reality regarding the way in which people today communicate among themselves. I wish to consider the development of digital social networks which are helping to create a new "agora", an open public square in which people share ideas, information and opinions, and in which new relationships and forms of community can come into being.

These spaces, when engaged in a wise and balanced way, help to foster forms of dialogue and debate which, if conducted respectfully and with concern for privacy, responsibility and truthfulness, can reinforce the bonds of unity between individuals and effectively promote the harmony of the human family. The exchange of information can become true communication, links ripen into friendships, and connections facilitate communion. If the networks are called to realize this great potential, the people involved in them must make an effort to be authentic since, in these spaces, it is not only ideas and information that are shared, but ultimately our very selves.

The development of social networks calls for commitment: people are engaged in building relationships and making friends, in looking for answers to their questions and being entertained, but also in finding intellectual stimulation and sharing knowledge and know-how. The networks are increasingly becoming part of the very fabric of society, inasmuch as they bring people together on the basis of these fundamental needs. Social networks are thus nourished by aspirations rooted in the human heart.

The culture of social networks and the changes in the means and styles of communication pose demanding challenges to those who want to speak about truth and values. Often, as is also the case with other means of social communication, the significance and effectiveness of the various forms of expression appear to be determined more by their popularity than by their intrinsic importance and value. Popularity, for its part, is often linked to celebrity or to strategies of persuasion rather than to the logic of argumentation. At times the gentle voice of reason can be overwhelmed by the din of excessive information and it fails to attract attention which is given instead to those who express themselves in a more persuasive manner. The social media thus need the commitment of all who are conscious of the value of dialogue, reasoned debate and logical argumentation; of people who strive to cultivate forms of discourse and expression which appeal to the noblest aspirations of those engaged in the communication process. Dialogue and debate can also flourish and grow when we converse with and take seriously people whose ideas are different from our own. "Given the reality of cultural diversity, people need not only to accept the existence of the culture of others, but also to aspire to be enriched by it and to offer to it whatever they possess that is good, true and beautiful" (Address at the Meeting with the World of Culture, B?lem, Lisbon, 12 May 2010).

The challenge facing social networks is how to be truly inclusive: thus they will benefit from the full participation of believers who desire to share the message of Jesus and the values of human dignity which his teaching promotes. Believers are increasingly aware that, unless the Good News is made known also in the digital world, it may be absent in the experience of many people for whom this existential space is important. The digital environment is not a parallel or purely virtual world, but is part of the daily experience of many people, especially the young. Social networks are the result of human interaction, but for their part they also reshape the dynamics of communication which builds relationships: a considered understanding of this environment is therefore the prerequisite for a significant presence there.

The ability to employ the new languages is required, not just to keep up with the times, but precisely in order to enable the infinite richness of the Gospel to find forms of expression capable of reaching the minds and hearts of all. In the digital environment the written word is often accompanied by images and sounds. Effective communication, as in the parables of Jesus, must involve the imagination and the affectivity of those we wish to invite to an encounter with the mystery of God?s love. Besides, we know that Christian tradition has always been rich in signs and symbols: I think for example of the Cross, icons, images of the Virgin Mary, Christmas cribs, stained-glass windows and pictures in our churches. A significant part of mankind?s artistic heritage has been created by artists and musicians who sought to express the truths of the faith.

In social networks, believers show their authenticity by sharing the profound source of their hope and joy: faith in the merciful and loving God revealed in Christ Jesus. This sharing consists not only in the explicit expression of their faith, but also in their witness, in the way in which they communicate "choices, preferences and judgements that are fully consistent with the Gospel, even when it is not spoken of specifically" (Message for the 2011 World Communications Day). A particularly significant way of offering such witness will be through a willingness to give oneself to others by patiently and respectfully engaging their questions and their doubts as they advance in their search for the truth and the meaning of human existence. The growing dialogue in social networks about faith and belief confirms the importance and relevance of religion in public debate and in the life of society.

For those who have accepted the gift of faith with an open heart, the most radical response to mankind?s questions about love, truth and the meaning of life ? questions certainly not absent from social networks ? are found in the person of Jesus Christ. It is natural for those who have faith to desire to share it, respectfully and tactfully, with those they meet in the digital forum. Ultimately, however, if our efforts to share the Gospel bring forth good fruit, it is always because of the power of the word of God itself to touch hearts, prior to any of our own efforts. Trust in the power of God?s work must always be greater than any confidence we place in human means. In the digital environment, too, where it is easy for heated and divisive voices to be raised and where sensationalism can at times prevail, we are called to attentive discernment. Let us recall in this regard that Elijah recognized the voice of God not in the great and strong wind, not in the earthquake or the fire, but in "a still, small voice" (1 Kg 19:11-12). We need to trust in the fact that the basic human desire to love and to be loved, and to find meaning and truth ? a desire which God himself has placed in the heart of every man and woman ? keeps our contemporaries ever open to what Blessed Cardinal Newman called the "kindly light" of faith.

Social networks, as well as being a means of evangelization, can also be a factor in human development. As an example, in some geographical and cultural contexts where Christians feel isolated, social networks can reinforce their sense of real unity with the worldwide community of believers. The networks facilitate the sharing of spiritual and liturgical resources, helping people to pray with a greater sense of closeness to those who share the same faith. An authentic and interactive engagement with the questions and the doubts of those who are distant from the faith should make us feel the need to nourish, by prayer and reflection, our faith in the presence of God as well as our practical charity: "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal" (1 Cor 13:1).

In the digital world there are social networks which offer our contemporaries opportunities for prayer, meditation and sharing the word of God. But these networks can also open the door to other dimensions of faith. Many people are actually discovering, precisely thanks to a contact initially made online, the importance of direct encounters, experiences of community and even pilgrimage, elements which are always important in the journey of faith. In our effort to make the Gospel present in the digital world, we can invite people to come together for prayer or liturgical celebrations in specific places such as churches and chapels. There should be no lack of coherence or unity in the expression of our faith and witness to the Gospel in whatever reality we are called to live, whether physical or digital. When we are present to others, in any way at all, we are called to make known the love of God to the furthest ends of the earth.

I pray that God?s Spirit will accompany you and enlighten you always, and I cordially impart my blessing to all of you, that you may be true heralds and witnesses of the Gospel. "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole creation" (Mk 16:15).

?From the Vatican, 24 January 2013, Feast of Saint Francis de Sales.

Jindal delivers sweeping argument against Obama's vision for country

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (Mario Tama/Getty Images)

CHARLOTTE, N.C.?It was a rematch years in the making, but Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal finally got another shot on Thursday to deliver a formal response to President Barack Obama's vision for the country.

In 2009, Jindal was nearly laughed off the national stage when he delivered the official Republican response to Obama's first address to a joint session of Congress. Jindal's "response," consisting of restrained rhetoric spoken awkwardly into a single camera, was universally panned as a dud. Some even called it a career killer.

Flash forward to 2013: Obama has been re-elected to his second term as president. At his inauguration ceremony, he delivers one of the most ambitious defenses of liberalism from an American president in modern history. With Mitt Romney out of the picture and the Republican Party in temporary post-election disarray, Jindal sees an opportunity for redemption and to position himself as the alpha in the party.

The circumstances seem perfect for a politician who harbors national ambitions. His venue is the winter meeting of the Republican National Committee, where the top party activists from every American state and territory have gathered to chart the GOP's next move. They're nervous about the party's future and worried about their ability to bring minorities into the fold. They're looking for a leader. Jindal, the son of Indian immigrants, sees a chance to make an early impression on the party faithful.

Throughout his 25-minute speech, Jindal rebutted Obama's defense earlier this week for a robust and active federal government and offered a counter-philosophy focused on growing private businesses beyond Washington without relying on the engine of the federal government.

"We must lay out the contrast between liberalism?s top-down government solutions and our bottom-up real world philosophy. We believe in creating abundance, not redistributing scarcity," he said. "We should let the other side try to sell Washington?s ability to help the economy, while we promote the entrepreneur, the risk-taker, the self-employed woman who is one sale away from hiring her first employee. Let the Democrats sell the stale power of more federal programs, while we promote the rejuvenating power of new businesses."

Jindal took on Obama's call for higher taxes on the wealthy, which the president has argued helps supply money for needed for federal programs that aid the poor and middle class. He slammed Obama's foreign policy agenda and the recent effort to reform federal laws restricting purchases of certain guns and high-caliber magazines that were used in deadly mass shootings during Obama's first term.

"Higher taxes still do not create prosperity for all. And more government still does not grow jobs," Jindal said. "If you believe in higher taxes, more debt, more government spending, weakness abroad, and taking guns from law-abiding citizens?you already have a party that is well represented in Washington. No, the Republican Party does not need to change our principles, but we might need to change just about everything else we do."

His address, audaciously sent to the press under a banner reading "Gov. Jindal to Refute President Obama?s Liberal Vision for America," lived up to its name, but it was as much a rebuttal of Republican tactics as a tirade against Obama.

"Today?s conservatism is completely wrapped up in solving the hideous mess that is the federal budget, the burgeoning deficits, the mammoth federal debt, the shortfall in our entitlement programs?even as we invent new entitlement programs. We seem to have an obsession with government bookkeeping," Jindal said. "This is a rigged game, and it is the wrong game for us to play."

He added: "We as Republicans have to accept that government number crunching?even conservative number crunching?is not the answer to our nation?s problems. ... Balancing our government?s books is not what matters most. Government is not the end all and be all."

Jindal went on to prescribe a message for the GOP that prioritizes economic growth over cutting federal spending.

"Instead of worrying about managing government, it?s time for us to address how we can lead America to a place where she can once again become the land of opportunity, where she can once again become a place of growth and opportunity," he said. "We should put all of our eggs in that basket as conservatives and Republicans."

The speech, delivered during a dinner amid the clanking of silverware and dishes, was interrupted only a few times by polite applause. While the words Jindal spoke appeared powerful on paper, he rushed through his remarks without a steady cadence. (It didn't help that near the end of his speech, a jazz band began to loudly warm up their instruments. Jindal ignored it.) Some of the words seemed mumbled.

It may have been the most sweeping argument against the president's agenda since the beginning of Obama's second term?and a powerful challenge to Republicans?but similar to 2009, the delivery may still need some work for a national debut.

Kindle Paperwhite-The World's Most Advanced E-Reader

Most Advanced E-Reader Display, 62% More Pixels, 25% More Contrast

Kindle Paperwhite's display is the most advanced e-reader display ever constructed. Featuring a 212 ppi display, Kindle Paperwhite has 62% more pixels than the previous generation Kindle, making text in books and periodicals crisp and clear at any size. Images are sharper, richer and show even more detail. Kindle Paperwhite's screen has 25% higher contrast than the previous generation Kindle- the blacks are blacker, and the whites are whiter.

Innovative Built-In Light

Backlit LCD displays direct light up through the display into the user's eyes. Kindle Paperwhite's patented front-lit display guides light underneath an anti-glare layer and down toward the display, away from the reader's eyes. This means a reader can read for hours with less eye fatigue and strain. The screen brightness is easily adjusted for reading in any light. The Paperwhite display provides an incredible experience in the dark and in direct sunlight.

Breakthrough Battery Life

Kindle Paperwhite's built-in front light is designed to be used at all times-both in daylight and in a dark room-for the clearest, crispest reading experience. In order to use the light at all times, Kindle Paperwhite requires exceptional power management to maintain the battery life that customers love about Kindle. Amazon's light guide technology precisely diffuses the light across the screen and only requires four LEDs to light the entire screen (unlike LCD screens which can use up to 50 LEDs). The light guide is so efficient that Kindle Paperwhite has a remarkable 8 weeks of battery life, even with the light on at all times.

Free 3G

Kindle's free 3G connection means customers never have to hunt for or pay for a Wi-Fi hotspot-they simply download and read books anytime, anywhere. Amazon pays for the 3G connection on Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G, so customers pay no monthly fees and sign no annual contracts.

Built-In Wi-Fi

Kindle Paperwhite comes with built-in Wi-Fi, letting readers discover new content at home or on the road anywhere you can access Wi-Fi.

Books in 60 Seconds

Find a book and start reading in seconds with our fast, free wireless delivery. No computer required to download content.

New Touch Technology

Kindle Paperwhite's new capacitive touch technology is uniquely integrated into the Paperwhite display, allowing for a thinner form factor for Kindle Paperwhite and even better touch accuracy.

Slim and Sleek Design

At just over a third of an inch thin and weighing 213 grams, Kindle Paperwhite is thinner than a magazine and weighs less than a typical paperback. The bezel height between the side of the device and the display itself is 77% thinner.

Hand-Tuned Fonts

Every font on Kindle Paperwhite is hand-tuned for maximum readability. The Amazon typography team worked at the pixel level to ensure consistency of stroke thickness and shape profiles across all individual glyphs, aligning each size to the specific grid of the new Paperwhite display. This allows for unprecedented sharpness of fonts. Kindle Paperwhite's higher resolution display also allows for new elegant typeface options, such as Baskerville and Palatino, which use thin stems that would not render well on a lower resolution display.

"Buy Once, Read Everywhere"

With free reading apps, customers can read their Kindle books on a large number of devices and platforms, including any Kindle as well as on iPhone, iPad, Android devices, Mac, PC, or Windows Phone.

Whispersync

Amazon's Whispersync technology synchronizes a customer's last page read, bookmarks and annotations across all of their devices, so they can always pick up where they left off.

Time to Read

Time to Read is a new feature for Kindle Paperwhite that helps readers know the amount of time it will take them to finish a chapter or a book. This feature is smart-it personalizes the time for each customer based on their reading speed and is constantly updated as the reader's speed and habits change. With Time to Read, it's never been easier to decide when to start a new chapter or finish the chapter you're reading.

Explore the "Bones of a Book" with X-Ray

With a single tap, readers can see all passages across a book that mention ideas, fictional characters, historical figures, places or topics that interest them, as well as more detailed descriptions from Wikipedia and Shelfari, Amazon's community-powered encyclopedia for book lovers. Amazon built X-Ray using its expertise in language processing and machine learning, access to significant storage and computing resources with Amazon S3 and EC2, and a deep library of book and character information.

Kindle Direct Publishing

Independent authors and publishers can make their books available in the Canada Kindle Store using Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) at http://kdp.amazon.ca. Canadian independent authors and publishers can utilize the English- or French-language KDP website to make their books available in Canada and more than 175 countries worldwide. They can also price their books and receive payments in Canadian dollars, earn up to 70% royalties on each book sold, all while retaining control of their content and copyrights.

Thousands of authors in Canada are already using KDP to make their books available in Kindle stores around the world, including Montreal resident Matthew Mather, the best-selling KDP author of the Complete Atopia Chronicles.

"My experience self-publishing with KDP has been nothing short of amazing," said Matthew Mather. "Within weeks of publishing, my book climbed to #1 on the science fiction best sellers list, and now I've sold tens of thousands of copies. I've just finished my second novel, "CyberStorm," and look forward to the idea of writing for a living, something I hadn't imagined possible just six months ago. The best part, though, has been the interaction with readers. I get emails from every corner of the world, contacting me to say how much they liked my work. This is an amazing feeling!"

Hey, nice job with the animal studies !
Great thing about studies is that it's easy for viewers to see your improvements. [Even though they can get tedious... yeah, i'm trying to do more studying too >.>]. Do more ples. :D

Your expressions translate well; it's clear to see what your characters are thinking by their faces. But if you were to pull that into the rest of the body by trying more dynamic poses, it could really help in exaggerating the expression. My advice; when you first start sketching out the figure, use the spine to set the pose and then do a loose gesture drawing. Then push the limbs so that they're in more of extremes. And try to avoid right angles. xD

Quantum States Between Order and Disorder

Jan. 23, 2013 ? With his research on quantum states in the realm between order and disorder, Professor J?rg Schmiedmayer's work has raised quite a stir; ultra cold atom clouds with a high degree of order approach a disordered thermal equilibrium. During this transition they spend some time in an astonishingly stable intermediate state. With a new ERC Grant, Schmiedmayer will now dig deeper into the physics of non-equilibrium phenomena in many-particle quantum systems.

How do quantum states melt?

Every day we can see transitions into a thermal equilibrium -- for instance when an icicle heats up and melts. When this happens, the entropy (a measure for the disorder in a physical system) increases and information about the system is lost. The ultra cold Bose-Einstein condensates created at the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) also approach a thermal equilibrium. In doing so, they go from a state which can also be described in terms of quantum physics to a state in which the quantum properties of the particles do not play an important role any more. In between, however, a surprisingly stable intermediate state can be found -- the so-called "pre-thermalized state."

"At first, the order in the system decays rapidly, but then, after reaching the pre-thermalized state, it stays practically constant," says J?rg Schmiedmayer. "Part of the quantum information can still be detected. The atom cloud has not yet forgotten that it has emerged from an extremely ordered Bose-Einstein condensate." While the initial loss of information takes place within a few milliseconds, the pre-thermalized state remains for more than a tenth of a second.

Quantum Computers and the Big Bang

Schmidmayer believes that this appearance on an intermediate state between quantum physical order and classical disorder is a very general phenomenon, which should also be visible in different systems. "Pre-thermalized states supposedly play a role in heavy ion collisions at extremely high energies, for instance at the LHC, CERN. Also, the cosmic background radiation could possibly come from a pre-thermalized state the whole universe was in shortly after the Big Bang," says Schmiedmayer. In quantum physics, the pre-thermalized state could be important for many different applications. If data is to be stored in a quantum computer or if quantum-calculations are to be carried out, a state of highly ordered disequilibrium has to be formed. The transition into a thermal equilibrium then destroys this state.

Republicans call Obama inaugural speech too partisan. Right or wrong?

President Obama's speech defended liberal touchstones, such as a strong role for government, but it raised issues that could divide GOP ranks, such as gay marriage, equal-pay legislation, and even amnesty for illegal immigrants.

On the first working day of President Obama?s second term, many conservatives are complaining that Mr. Obama?s inaugural address was a paean to liberalism and big government that presages four more years of Washington partisan warfare.

The right charges that Obama?s speech was all about the limits of individual action and the virtue of ?collectivism" and that it ignored the biggest problem in US public life: the growing national debt.

?[Obama] hopes to reorient the American mainstream and locate conservatives outside it,? writes Rich Lowry at National Review Online. ?He wants to take the Founders from the Right and baptize the unreconstructed entitlement state and the progressive agenda in the American creed.?

Republican lawmakers were generally more circumspect but expressed disappointment that Obama?s speech didn?t contain more talk about reaching out and working with the other side.

?I was more hopeful that you?d hear more bipartisanship,? said Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R) of California, House majority whip, in a Tuesday interview on CBS.

What phrases is the right worried about here? Many Democrats were thrilled by Obama?s second inaugural address. They saw it as an unvarnished defense of liberalism and the role of government in American society.

Well, many conservatives did not like Obama?s direct and positive references to gay marriage, equal-pay legislation, and possible amnesty for illegal immigrants. They see these as liberal touchstones and possible wedge issues that might split the Republican Party.

Climate-change legislation is similarly low on the GOP agenda, yet Obama talked at some length about what he sees as the need to take action on this issue.

Obama defended Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security as things that strengthen the nation. ?They free us to take the risks that make this country great,? the president said.

Yet he said nothing about how he would fund these costly entitlement programs going forward, conservatives said.

?In celebrating the power of the government to lead the nation forward, Obama breezed past the costs of an ever-growing public sector and made only passing mention of the country?s most urgent problem as he took the oath to lead it: debt,? wrote Stephen F. Hayes at the right-leaning Weekly Standard.

In the short run, this may mean that in the coming months it is unlikely fiscal negotiations will produce any sort of grand bargain in which the White House accepts trims in exchange for GOP concessions.

That?s because he offered up few sweeteners to Republicans, writes Fred Barnes in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.

?The highly partisan theme was a departure from recent second inaugural addresses,? according to Mr. Barnes.

In the longer run, Obama?s perceived tilt leftward will endanger red-state or swing-state Democrats, other conservative commentators claim.

There are eight such senators up for reelection in 2014: Sens. Mark Warner of Virginia, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Mark Begich of Alaska, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, Max Baucus of Montana, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, and Mark Udall of Colorado.

These incumbents ?will have nothing to gain by taking tough votes on Obama?s left-wing ideas,? writes Jennifer Rubin on her Right Turn blog at The Washington Post.

That may be true. But Obama?s pivot to a more partisan stance in his inaugural address is simply recognition of political reality, others say.

Voters like to hear references to the need for Washington to work together, and politicians like to believe they can surmount partisan turmoil to get things done. But voters and the two big US political parties have been gradually becoming more polarized for decades, as former Democrats in the South turn Republican and moderate Republicans disappear or turn to the other side, writes George Washington University associate professor of political science John Sides in The Huffington Post.

?My purpose is not to decide which party deserves more blame. It is to point out that polarization and partisanship have deep roots and cannot easily be changed by a single political leader, even the president. This is why Obama?s promise as a post-partisan would never last long,? writes Mr. Sides.
